Description

Hele House is a large house, originally built in the late 18th century and substantially extended in the mid-19th century. It is now divided into smaller units. The house has solid rendered walls and a slated, hipped roof, with rendered chimneys.

The main body of the house is double-fronted and of double-depth, featuring a central entrance hall and staircase wings on either side, with the wing on the left believed to be from the late 18th century. It has two storeys and a garret, with a symmetrical facade of six windows. The central doorway has a moulded frame and cornice. A two-storied bow window with six and four-paned sashes is on the right side, and a square bay window with six and four-paned sashes, Grecian incised decoration, and a bracketed cornice is on the left side of the ground storey. There are two six-paned sash windows in the upper storey. A bracketed eaves cornice runs along the top of the facade. The wing to the left has six-paned sashes.

Inside, the main body of the house contains a wooden staircase with thin square balusters and shaped step-ends. A 1973 listing description refers to an arched stair window at the head with interlaced bars. The two front rooms feature good marble chimneypieces. A door with incised Greek decoration is located in the left wing. Only a partial inspection of the interior has been carried out.

The house was known as Lower Hele until at least the mid-19th century. An advertisement in The Times in 1846 stated the house had been "erected a few years since" but was left unfinished.
