Description

The Dell is a late medieval farmhouse, later used as a barn and stable, and now a house. It was altered in the 18th or 19th century and reconverted to a house in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of stone rubble, with parts rendered, and has a slate roof. The plan is L-shaped. The north-west wing originally had opposing wide doorways, likely leading to a former threshing floor. Two storeys high, the building has irregular openings which are now filled with late 20th century doorways and windows. On the south-east side are blocked openings, one with a ventilation slit, and stone steps leading to an upper storey. A low lean-to, with wooden posts and stone rubble infill, adjoins the building, but this belongs to Summerhill Farmhouse. An older listing mentions a former part timber-framed partition and substantial remains of a late medieval roof, including eight trusses of originally jointed-cruck form, although all the wall posts were removed. This roof also retains slightly cambered collars and threaded purlins, with a few original rafters considerably blackened by smoke.
