Description

West Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the late 18th century and was modernised in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of plastered cob and Drewsteignton stone rubble, with a cob stack topped by 19th-century brick and a thatched roof. The building has two storeys and faces southwest, away from the road. It features a two-room plan with a through passage and has a single-storey outshot on the right side, along with a 20th-century thatched extension at the rear.

The larger room is located on the right and has a stack in the gable end, while the roof is half-hipped to the left. The front has three windows over two storeys, consisting of 19th and 20th-century wooden casements. There are small 19th-century two-light casements with two panes each, and a door located behind a 20th-century glass-sided porch. The outshot, which has a corrugated iron roof, was originally a pigsty and still retains a low door.

Inside, the cottage is plain but well-preserved, featuring a cob fireplace with a brick side-oven to the left and a contemporary oak-framed winder stair that rises over the oven projection. There is a plain finished crossbeam, and 20th-century stairs on the left side are lined with imported 17th-century oak panelling. It is possible that the left side was added in the 19th century to convert the original single-room cottage into a larger dwelling.
