Description
Clifford Bridge is a road bridge over the River Teign, which marks the boundary between the parishes of Moretonhampstead and Dunsford. It dates from the 17th century or earlier and was widened in the mid-19th century. The bridge is constructed of granite ashlar, except for the arches of the original bridge, which are made of roughly-dressed granite. It features three spans and was originally quite narrow, but has been widened on both sides. The original structure has round arches that spring from piers with chamfered impost moulds. The widened sections are also made of granite ashlar and include wide segmental arches that spring from enlarged cutwaters of the original bridge, with slightly advanced abutments that are swept out at each end. A continuous stringcourse runs over the arches, topped by a parapet with rounded granite coping. The bridge is mentioned in historical accounts by Leland.
