Description

78 and 80 East Street are a mirrored pair of houses dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The walls are rendered, with the upper storeys at the front covered in painted 20th-century tiles, likely over timber-framing. The roofs are slated, with the front span running parallel to the street and the rear spans at right angles. Each side wall features two rendered chimneys. The houses are single-fronted and double-depth, with a staircase located behind the front and back rooms. They rise to three storeys and have a three-window front, with independent doorways in the centre. Each doorway is flanked by pilasters and has an entablature, panelled reveals, and six-panelled doors, where the bottom two panels are flush. The doors also feature good brass knockers, with a female head at No 78 and a lion's head at No 80. Each house has a triple-sashed window on the ground storey, late 19th-century canted bay windows on the second storey with a single-light sash window between them, and three third-storey windows that were altered in the late 20th century. The entire front is flanked by rusticated pilaster-strips and has a bracketed eaves-cornice.
