Description

This building is a stable and attached cart shed located approximately 30 metres north of Southmeads. It was likely built in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The structure features granite rubble walls and a corrugated iron roof with gable ends. The layout consists of a stable on one side and an open-fronted cart shed with two bays on the other side. It is a single-storey building with an asymmetrical front.

The right side is the open-fronted cart shed, which is divided into two bays by a central rough granite post. The stable has a door on the right with a timber lintel and a lean-to outshut at the right-hand gable end. The left gable end includes a granite-framed ventilation slit at both the ground and first floor levels, along with a central drainage hole at ground level. On the rear wall, there is a straight joint to the right of centre, with dressed quoins on the right side and larger stones at that end. There is also a granite-framed ventilation slit on the ground floor towards that end.

Inside the stable, the dividing wall from the cart shed projects slightly in from the door, containing some large dressed granite blocks. This wall extends up to the first floor height and has a line of projecting dressed stones at the top. The building is part of an important group of farm buildings and early houses in a small moorland settlement on the edge of Dartmoor.
