Description
This is a large house, built in the 1870s for the Hamlyn family, who were mill owners in Buckfastleigh. It is constructed of stucco and has a natural slate roof with lead rolls and a stack with a rendered shaft and cornice. The house follows an overall L-shaped plan, with the main, double-depth block facing Plymouth Road, and a two-storey service wing set at a right angle.
The front elevation has three storeys, while the service wing has two. The symmetrical three-bay entrance elevation has deep eaves supported by moulded brackets, and rusticated quoins which become toothed above the first-floor level. The central doorway is framed by a stuccoed doorcase with panelled pilasters, massive acanthus-carved consoles, and a projecting pediment. The doorway has a modern replacement door with a glazed overlight. Canted bay windows are on either side of the entrance, with moulded cornices and 4-pane sash windows. First-floor windows are pedimented, with pilastered architraves featuring sunk panels and richly-moulded consoles, and sill blocks below a moulded string. The second-floor windows have moulded frames, plain pilasters, and sill blocks, all with 4-pane sash windows.
The Plymouth Road elevation is similar, but the ground-floor windows have moulded sill blocks and pedimented architraves with panelled pilasters and richly-moulded consoles. A pediment is missing from the first-floor window on the left, and a probable secondary doorway exists between the left-hand window and the adjacent bays, likely leading to a recessed 6-panel door with an overlight.
A small area in front of the Plymouth Road elevation is enclosed by late 19th-century iron railings that feature square section verticals and elaborate finials. The interior was not inspected, but is known to retain original features including elaborate fireplaces.
In 1879, John Hamlyn Junior of Hamlyn Brothers resided at Tollmarsh, and the house holds historical significance due to its association with this prominent local family.
