Description

Cobblestones is a cottage that was originally part of a larger house, dating from the early 16th century. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble and features a steeply pitched asbestos slate roof with gabled ends, along with a catslide roof at the rear over an outshut. The left (west) gable end has a large rendered chimney stack with set-offs. The layout was likely a three-room and through passage plan, possibly originally divided by low screens. The east end has been entirely rebuilt and is now a separate dwelling known as Willow Trees, which is not included in this listing. The cottage was floored around the late 16th or early 17th century and has a later outshut at the rear. It is one storey high with an attic and has two windows, featuring small 20th-century casements and two gabled dormers at the eaves level. A plank door is located at the centre.

Inside, there are three chamfered ceiling beams with step stops, and a timber fireplace lintel in the west gable end that is chamfered with run-out stops. The roof consists of four trusses with morticed apices and dovetail lap-jointed collars, secured with side pegs. The threaded purlins and diagonal ridge piece are visible, with one tier of purlins showing in the first-floor rooms. Some rafters remain, and all roof timbers are smoke-blackened, particularly over the east end, which was originally the hall.
