Description
Higher Dean is a house dating from the mid to late 17th century, constructed from whitewashed stone rubble. It features a low-pitched asbestos sheet roof with gabled ends and has rendered end stacks, while the lateral front stack has been truncated. The layout consists of three rooms and a through passage, with a large lateral stack at the front of the hall and gable end stacks serving the inner room and kitchen. The inner room was originally unheated, with the stack being a later addition. The partition to the passage has been removed, making it part of the lower room.
There is a two-storey, one-bay addition from the 19th century at the lower end, along with a later outshut at the rear. The house stands two storeys high and has a three-window range, plus one additional window to the left. The 19th-century windows are three-light casements with horizontal glazing bars. A doorway to the left of the stack leads into the through passage and has a slated hood, although the doorway is partly blocked.
Inside, the hall features a chamfered cross beam and chamfered joists with run-out stops. The lateral fireplace in the hall is blocked, and the partition to the inner room is boarded over. The partition on the lower side of the passage has been removed. The roof structure and first floor have not been inspected.
