Description
11 and 12 Higher Dean is a house that has been divided into a row of cottages and later converted back into two cottages. It dates from around the 16th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is constructed of roughcast stone rubble and features an asbestos slate roof with gabled ends. It has a three-room layout with a through passage plan. It may have originally had an open roof throughout, which was later floored and the eaves were raised. There is a lateral hall stack at the rear, a gable end stack at the lower end, and an oriel stack at the ridge near the higher end. A lean-to addition is present at the left-hand, higher end. The building is two storeys high and has a long, asymmetrical range of seven windows. Most of the windows are 19th-century two and three-light casements with glazing bars. The through passage doorway is located to the right of centre and features a slated hood with a 20th-century glazed door fixed to form a window. There is a plank door at the lower end to the right.
The interior of No 12, at the right higher end, has been much altered, but early features may be boxed in. The roof has been largely rebuilt but retains trusses at the higher end with threaded purlins and a threaded ridge piece, although the dovetail lap-jointed far collar is missing. The roof over the former hall in the centre and lower end has been replaced in the 18th or 19th century.
