Description
9 and 10 Lower Dean is a farmhouse that has been converted into two cottages, dating from the early 17th century or earlier. The building is constructed of stone rubble and is rendered at the front, topped with an asbestos slate roof that has gabled ends. It features large stone rubble oriel and gable end stacks. The layout consists of three rooms with a through passage, with No 10 occupying the inner room to the left. The building has been extended at the lower end, which includes an axial stack backing onto the through passage, with winder stairs beside the stack, and a kitchen stack at the lower end. The structure is two storeys high and has a long range of six windows. The windows are late 18th to early 19th century three-light casements, some of which have leaded panes. Three of No 10's windows on the left were replaced in the 20th century. There is a passage doorway near the centre featuring a chamfered timber doorway with run-out stops and a plank door with cover moulds. Above the doorway to the left is a small stair window with leaded panes. The rear wall of No 10 appears to have been rebuilt.
Inside, there are three chamfered ceiling beams in the former hall, and some 18th century joinery remains, including doors and cupboards. The roof space is inaccessible, but trusses can be seen in the first-floor room, including three trusses with cracked feet over the former hall and other slightly curved trusses visible in the first-floor rooms.
