Description

No. 50 North Street is a house dating from the 16th or 17th century, which has been re-windowed in the 19th or 20th century. It features solid roughcast walls, which are partly made of stone rubble and possibly some cob. The roof is slated and half-hipped to the right. There are two large stone rubble chimneys on the rear wall, with the left chimney, which heats the former hall, having a tapered cap. The house has a two-room layout with a through passage and a small extension behind the lower right-hand room. It stands two storeys tall and is three windows wide, with an off-centre doorway to the right. The gable wall to the right has two windows on the ground floor and one above, all featuring small-paned wood casements. The entrance has a late 20th-century plank door.

Inside, the left-hand ground floor room, believed to be the hall, contains a granite chimneypiece from the 16th or 17th century on the rear wall, with a roughly shaped lintel supported by large rounded corbels. There is also a 17th-century chamfered ceiling beam with two scroll-stops. The rest of the interior has not been inspected, except for the plain through passage. There may be early roof timbers and other features hidden under plaster. Additionally, No. 54 North Street, which is not included in the listing, is now part of this house and contains an early-looking fireplace that is reported to be a 20th-century construction using old materials.
