Description

No. 40 Fore Street is a house with a shop, dating from around 1775 to 1800, possibly a remodelling of an earlier building. It is constructed with mass wall construction, stuccoed and blocked out, and has an asbestos slate roof that is gabled at the right end. The stacks were not visible during the survey, and it features cast-iron rainwater goods. The building has a double-depth plan, one room wide, with a room over the cartway to the right. The ground-floor plan has been altered for shop use.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front. It has an eaves cornice with a modillion frieze. The doorway is located to the left and features a doorcase with panelled pilasters and an entablature with roundels. The door is a 20th-century glazed door with an overlight. To the right, there is a 19th-century shop window with panelled pilasters, triglyph brackets, and a cornice with a modillion frieze. A three-light window with a moulded frame and mullions is also present. The cartway to the right curves around to the rear of the building and includes one section of probably 18th-century chamfered crossbeams that support wide floorboards.

The interior of the ground floor has been altered in the 20th century, but features of interest may still survive elsewhere.
