Description

29 Fore Street is a house that may have originally been an urban linhay or another type of outbuilding. It is part of a multi-phase terrace that includes Nos 30 and 31 to the left. The building dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century and has undergone later alterations. It is constructed of painted stone rubble and has a slate roof that is gabled at both ends. The right end stack is shared with No. 35 and features a stone rubble shaft with old pots.

The plan is built at right angles to No. 35 and faces east into one of the larger courts, known as Fowler's Court, located behind the south side of Fore Street. The house has a single-depth plan with one room on the ground floor and 20th-century stairs in the rear right corner.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical two-window front. It has a central recessed plank door flanked by probably late 19th-century two-light timber casements, each with three panes per light. On the first floor, there is a central three-light casement with three panes per light, and a small 20th-century one-light window to the left.

Inside, there are chamfered crossbeams with small step stops visible at the rear. The stops are not visible on the front where the beams are mortised into a substantial rail. The lintel over the doorway has redundant mortises that indicate it has been reused. There is a small, probably 20th-century plain open fireplace on the right end wall in the stack shared with No. 35.

Historically, the court associated with this building includes a former cider house and was used for workshops and small-scale urban industry. This building is an altered but early surviving example of a back-court structure, which was once a characteristic feature of the town.
