Description
No. 24 Fore Street is a shop with accommodation above, currently functioning as a post office. It dates from around the 1880s and is likely a remodelling of an earlier structure. The building is constructed with mass wall techniques, finished in stucco, and features a slate roof that is gabled at both ends, with a stack at the right end and a cast-iron gutter.
The exterior consists of two storeys with an asymmetrical front that has two windows, arranged in a regular pattern. It is topped with a modillion eaves cornice. A continuous fascia runs across the front, adorned with finely painted consoles that have carved heads. To the left, there is a recessed panelled door leading to the accommodation, featuring upper panels that are fielded and a deep overlight. The shop front to the right, likely dating from the 1880s, includes plate-glass windows that are canted towards a half-glazed panelled shop door, also with a deep overlight. The shop window is supported by cast-iron columns with moulded bases and capitals.
The interior has not been inspected, but it may contain interesting features. This building is included in the register for its group value and notable shop front.
