Description

No. 54, which includes the walls of the rear plot, is a house currently used as a restaurant. It dates from the late 17th century or earlier and was refronted in the early 19th century. The building is stuccoed and has a slate roof with gabled ends. There are two rear lateral stacks with stone rubble shafts and cast-iron rainwater goods. The overall plan is L-shaped, with the main block being two rooms wide and a cartway access on the right, leading to a rear left wing that is at right angles.

The exterior features two storeys and a four-window front that is symmetrical to the left, along with the cartway and a room above it on the right. The shop front has moulded pilasters on the left and right, with a deep projecting fascia supported by curly brackets. The fascia rises to form a pediment in the center above a 20th-century timber small-pane front door with a deep overlight. There are shallow small-pane 20th-century bow windows on the left and right, and four early 19th-century sash windows with 16 panes each.

The rear wing is constructed of stone rubble and has a shallow pitched roof with a rear left lateral stack. Inside, the left-hand fireplace features a late 17th-century moulded lintel with bar stops, while the fireplace in the right-hand room is plainer. Historically, the building was divided into two parts with a central passage; the right-hand side served as the co-op butcher, and the left-hand side was a private house. Additionally, the stone rubble walls of the rear plot extend to the River Mardle.
