Description
No. 17, including walls to the rear garden, is an 18th-century house located on Fore Street in Buckfastleigh. It is constructed of painted local stone rubble and features a slate roof that is gabled at both ends, with end stacks—one having a brick shaft and the other a rendered shaft. The house has a single-depth main block that is two rooms wide, with a central entrance passage. There is a late 19th-century rear right wing that is at right angles to the main block and has a separate entrance, likely serving as a workshop. The front corner of the house is acute.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay front. The central entrance features a four-panel 19th-century front door set within a round-headed doorway that has a blind fanlight above it. There are two ground floor and two outer first-floor windows, all of which are 16-pane sashes—two are early 19th-century, while the other two are later horned replacements. Above the doorway, there is a blind recess. The rear right wing has a brick front that faces the courtyard.
Inside, the interior is plain and plastered, retaining 19th-century joinery, although earlier features may be hidden. Additionally, there are tall grey limestone rubble walls that enclose a triangular garden at the rear.
