Description

16 Fore Street is a building in Buckfastleigh, originally serving as assembly rooms for the King's Arms Hotel and formerly a bank, dating from the 1820s. The exterior features stuccoed and blocked walls with a slate roof that is hipped at the ends. It has end stacks with brick shafts and platbands, and the cast-iron guttering is stamped with lions' heads.

The building has a tall carriageway entrance on the left that leads to a former courtyard at the rear. The first floor contains the assembly rooms, which are highlighted by large windows on the front, while the ground floor has been converted for banking use, with offices upstairs that include some ceilings from the assembly rooms.

The structure is two storeys high with an asymmetrical yet regular four-window front. It has deep eaves with an eaves cornice. The ground floor features the tall carriageway entrance to the left, and to the right is a central recessed doorway with a 20th-century replacement door and overlight. The doorcase is pilastered with moulded capitals, an entablature, and a projecting cornice. The doorway is flanked by windows with moulded eared architraves and sill blocks. The windows are twelve-pane sashes, although the lower lights have been altered and made blind. The first floor has three very tall windows for the assembly rooms, similar in detail but fitted with nine over nine-pane sashes. Above the carriageway is a shorter window with similar details, which is a nine-pane fixed window. The interior has been altered for bank use.
