Description

The Former Trustee Savings Bank, located at 33 East Castle Street, is an early 19th-century bank that has undergone later alterations and adaptations for different uses.

The building is made of brick with stucco render on the main elevations. It features timber hornless sash windows, some of which do not have glazing bars. The structure sits on an irregular corner plot and consists of two storeys, with the main elevations facing west towards Postern Gate and south towards East Castle Street. The main entrance is located at the corner between these two streets, with an additional entrance on the Bank Street elevation and another inserted entrance on Postern Gate.

Architecturally, the bank showcases a simplified Classical design. The three main elevations are stuccoed and include pilasters, a plinth with a string course, and rustication at the ground floor level. The main doorway is framed by a moulded architrave topped with a cornice hood supported by consoles. On the Postern Gate elevation, the door to the left bay appears to have been a former window, now with a dropped cill. The Bank Street elevation consists of three bays with a recessed central door that also has a hood on consoles. The ground floor openings across all elevations feature flat heads with vermiculated keystones and segmental arches above a storey band. The first-floor openings have moulded architraves with scrolled bases and moulded cill bands. A moulded eaves cornice runs along the top, above which is a low parapet pierced with ornamental panels.

The interior has not been inspected.
