Description
Chestnut Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, with a 20th-century extension. It features square-panelled timber-framing and limestone rubble, while the extension is rendered. The cottage has a thatched roof with decorative ridge thatching and brick stacks. It has an 'L'-shaped main body, which includes a projecting bread oven at the southeast corner and a 20th-century extension on the north-facing gable. The building is 1½ storeys tall, with a two-light 20th-century wooden casement window on the ground floor of the main body and a similar two-light eyebrow dormer above. The extension also has 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. There is a 20th-century plank door to the main body, although the original entry may have been through the south gable end. Inside, there is an open fireplace with a bread oven opening off it, featuring a cast iron door made by the Coalbrookdale Company. The interior also includes a beam with a deep flat chamfer and stepped stops, as well as an early plank door leading to the bedroom.
