Description
Old Manor Farmhouse is a former farmhouse, now a house, dating probably to the late 16th century, with significant additions and alterations in 1615, 1618, 1622 (recorded by datestones), and later in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of roughly squared, coursed stone, with a stone slate roof. It has a ‘U’ shaped front, four bays wide, with two rear wings of 1.5 and 2.5 storeys respectively.
On the road frontage, a plinth is present only on the left side of the doorway. All windows are mullioned with hoodmoulds, except for those above the hall. The left wing features a 6-light king mullion window on the ground floor, with a datestone 'I B A I / 1615' above it. Above this is a 4-light king mullion window, and a 2-light window in the attic, all beneath a parapet gable with a cross-gablet apex. A blocked window is set under the eaves on the right return. The central section has a 3-light and a 4-light window with a king mullion; a boarded door is set above two stone steps, enclosed by a double ovolo surround with a hoodmould, and another datestone 'A B / 1618' is positioned above. A 20th-century two-light window is located to the right, with a 17th-century two-light window above it, the lower portion of the lights being filled in. A 6-light mullion and transom window with a king mullion is carried up into a dormer on the left wall – above which an oval window features a moulded surround with four keys. The right wing has a slit window below the eaves on its left return, and a four-light window with a king mullion on the main front, with a 3-light window above and a 2-light window in the attic, all beneath a parapet gable with cross-gablet apex. Two ashlar chimneys with moulded caps are on the left return. A ridge chimney is located to the left of the cross-passage, featuring two diamond-set flues and moulded caps, with a similar late 20th-century single flue on the ridge of the right wing.
The interior includes a timber-framed wall to the right of the cross passage, and another recessed wall behind the projecting right wing. The main room on the right has exposed beams and joists, a wide fireplace with a flat, 3-centred arch and moulded surround. The hall to the left of the cross passage features chequerboard paving, a stone fireplace with a Tudor arch, strapwork banding, a moulded shelf inscribed ‘1622 AB’, quartered ceiling, heavy chamfered beams, and stopped chamfered ceiling joists with half beams to the walls. In the front room of the left wing, dust-ledge panelling with a moulded top, a double ovolo fireplace surround, a Tudor arch and a moulded stone shelf are present. The ceiling is similar to the hall, and a 5-panel door is included. A hollow chamfer is visible on the beam to the rear wing where the staircase is located. The staircase itself appears to be reset, with square, panelled newels, splat balusters and an open well. On the first floor, a timber-framed wall is present in the stair wing. Dust-ledge panelling is found in one room in the left wing, showcasing a fluted top, alongside a late-18th-century Adam-style fireplace surround with a basket grate. The over hall features a stone fireplace surround with bolection moulding. The roof possesses a collar truss with curved wind braces. The left half of the building appears to be an addition to or rebuild of part of an earlier house; remnants of this earlier structure survive to the right of the cross passage, with a later balancing stone wing added to the front.
