Description
The John Chadnor monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard of the Church of St. Michael, approximately 1 metre south of the nave. It commemorates John Chadnor, who died in 1778, Elizabeth Chadnor, who died in 1786, and others. The tomb is constructed from limestone, sandstone, and blue lias.
On the south side, there is an inscription dedicated to John and Elizabeth Chadnor, surrounded by decorative panels featuring foliate designs. The north side is made of blue lias and bears an inscription for Margaret Chadnor, the wife of John Chadnor, who died in 1727. This side previously had a foliate marginal panel at the east end, which was found lying on top of the tomb in April 1985.
At the east end, there is an inscription for Anne, the wife of Richard Hogg of Eldersfield, who died in 1817. The west end features an inscription in memory of six children of John and Elizabeth Hopkins, who died in infancy in the 19th century. The inscriptions at the ends of the tomb are flanked by fielded marginal panels.
