Description

The Malt House is a former malthouse and house, dating from the 18th century and 20th century. It is constructed of brick with moulded slag blocks forming a plinth. The building has a rectangular plan, with domestic accommodation located at the riverside gable end. There is a 20th-century lean-to porch on the riverside facade and a part-glazed conservatory against the south wall, although these features are not of special interest.

The facade is three storeys high and has two windows. The first floor features 12-pane sash windows, while the second floor has 6-pane sash windows, all with gauged brick heads. On the lower left, there is a three-light 20th-century casement window, within an area that previously contained a 6-panel door flanked by pilasters, with a fanlight and a modillioned pediment above. To the right, there is a part-glazed lean-to in front of a part-glazed 20th-century doorway located lower right.

At the rear, the former malthouse is 2½ storeys tall. The ground floor of the roadside gable end has two segmental-headed doorways, one of which is partly blocked with a window inserted. Above this, there is a central doorway with a 2-light window featuring a heavy wooden frame inserted in the blocking. Double plank doors are set within a segmental-headed surround above. The north wall includes a 20th-century aluminium garage door with a concrete lintel, a segmental-headed pitching door, and four segmental-headed windows (one blocked), with the others having 20th-century windows inserted. There are two 20th-century casements with concrete lintels. The south wall has four 2-light segmental-headed windows, along with three 2-light windows located immediately below the eaves.
