Description
Corndean Hall is a large detached country villa built in the early 19th century, though it stands on the site of houses that date back to at least 1540. The exterior features smooth rendering, a limestone string course, a parapet, and a hipped Welsh slate roof. The main block has two full-height semi-circular bays, with a large set-back wing to the left that is divided into two parts.
The building has two storeys and a basement, with a total of seven sash windows on the front, featuring fine glazing bars. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door set beneath a haunched segmental arch and a heavy dropped keystone, leading to a 20th-century hexagonal porch, which is accessed by seven steps. The left extension has two storeys, with one storey above two small single-light sashes. Beyond this, there is a half-rendered and half-limestone extension with a hipped slate roof, which includes various windows and a 20th-century door.
At the back, the villa has two storeys and an attic, with various sash windows that also have glazing bars. Notably, there is an octagonal bay with a parapet and a three-light sash window on the ground floor to the left. All the glazing bars are very slender, reflecting an early 19th-century profile.
Inside, the villa features a fine curved staircase with stick balusters and a mahogany handrail, along with original shutters, cornices, and doors, all in excellent condition. The large brick-vaulted cellar adds to the historical significance of the property.
