Description

The building is a barn at Grange Farm, dating from the mid to late 18th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It features English bond brickwork, a stone plinth, and a tiled roof. The barn has five bays and includes central porches, with a two-bay cartshed and granary located at one end. Lean-tos extend along the entire south side to the depth of the porch.

The gable facing the road has a boarded door and a metal window on the right, and another metal window on the left, all with concrete lintels. Between these openings, there are brick steps leading to the granary, which has stone treads, a quarter landing, and a simple handrail. The granary has a boarded door and a window to the left, both with cambered brick heads, and features a parapet gable. The right return has a low wall leading to the lean-to, with various windows and double boarded doors to the porch, topped by a gable.

A single-storey wing at the right end is not considered of special interest. Inside, the barn has diamond air-vents in the sides and ends, including on the originally internal walls. It features an unusual queen-strut truss, with a collar set between the struts, two pairs of square butt purlins set vertically, a plank ridge, and long windbraces rising from the wallplate and cutting the rafters. There are doorways on each side of the south porch leading into the lean-tos. The cartshed has been extended into the lean-to and originally had a central timber post supporting the main north opening, with a timber lintel above. The granary features a tie-beam truss with angle struts and a collar. The lean-tos on the left return are not of special interest.
