Description

The barn and open shed at Parks Farm date from the 18th century, with possible mid-19th century alterations. The structure features rubble walls, squared quoins, squared stone piers, and a stone slate roof. The barn is a five-bay design with a central porch on one side and a four-bay extension that is partially lofted, offset to one end. The barn is positioned away from the house and has a plinth with a wide central opening that has a timber lintel below the eaves. On either side of this opening, there are two small circular air vents set in ashlar blocks, and the gables have parapets. Toward the house, there is a boarded cover over a pitching-hole on the right, a projecting porch, and an opening at eaves level on the end, with weatherboarding over the gable and two circular air vents on the left. There are lean-to dog-kennels that are not of special interest, and the ends of the barn also feature parapet gables.

Inside, there is a loft inserted at one end, supported by tie-beam trusses with a high collar and short angle struts, along with two pairs of purlins and a plank ridge. Slightly set back on the left and at a lower level is a four-bay open-fronted building, which has tapered square stone piers with chamfered undersides to the caps. Two of the piers on the right stop below the eaves, with a weatherboarded wall above, while the left side extends to the eaves. Internally, two right piers are duplicated to support the granary floor above, featuring a queen-strut truss on the left and a gable truss at the end of the granary, both faced with weatherboarding and reused from a timber-framed building. The open range is notable for its height, with half of it being particularly tall.
