Description

Sudeley Hill Farmhouse, now divided into two houses, dates to the 16th and 17th centuries. It is constructed of squared and coursed limestone, with some rubble, and has stone slate roofs. The farmhouse presents an overall L-shaped plan, comprising three distinct but connected units.

The wing furthest from the road is two storeys and has two windows. It features a coped gable and a single ashlar stack to its east gable. The first floor has a small 3-light and a 2-light chamfered mullion casement, with square stops to the chamfers and drips. The ground floor has replacement 3-light casements, a pair of 20th-century French doors, and a 2-light casement under a lean-to roof. A 3-light chamfered mullion casement sits in the west gable, above two late 20th-century casements. This section is connected to the rest of the building only by a short stone wall.

The central section has two gables with saddle stones and simple stone stacks to the main gables. It is one-and-a-half storeys high and has 2-light chamfered mullion casements with square stops in the gables, above two similar 2-light casements, one replacing a former door opening, and a 3-light casement with a transome. A 3-light fixed wood casement is also present above a former door opening. The ground floor features large, roughly squared limestone blocks.

The third unit, at the road end, has coped gables, a saddle stone and a small ball finial to the outer gable, and a stone stack on the left. A projecting stair turret is located at the rear with a coped gable and a large external stack that reduces to a small square section in the upper 5 metres. The main part of the unit is two storeys and has two windows grouped to the left. The first floor has 2 and 3-light chamfered mullion casements without drips, above a 3-light 19th-century wood casement under a stopped drip, and a pair of early 20th-century glazed doors, approached by three steps and set back, the doors being set under a stopped drip where a window previously existed. The gable facing the road has 3-light casements at the second floor with chamfered mullions and a stopped drip, similar casements at the first floor without a drip, and 19th-century wood casements on the ground floor, also under a stopped drip. The stair turret has a 2-light chamfered mullion casement with a drip at the first floor and without at the ground floor.

The interior has been modified, but retains a full-width deep fireplace with a new bressummer in the central section, and an oak winding stair, likely of the 17th century, on the first floor. Various outbuildings stand to the east of the main building.
