Description
A mid-19th century terrace wall and dog kennels, built for J. Dent, located to the east and south of Sudeley Castle. The terrace wall is a long, 'L'-plan structure with returns to the west wing of the castle and to the dog kennels. The east wall, situated behind a ha-ha, rises to a plain string course and is divided into 17 bays by square piers. The end bays have low walls with a coped stone top, while the remaining bays feature a blocking course with a moulded top edge, 17 square balusters with stopped-chamfered angles, and a moulded rail. The south wall begins with a low wall, followed by a sloping section with three interior steps. It then features a continuous stone string wall, a balustraded section of thirteen bays, further steps and a sloping section, and ultimately terminates in an octagonal stone pier with a plinth and pyramid top, serving as a gatepost. Double gates are present, along with a similar pier, a stone wall with a moulded cap, and steps descending in four stages to the right corner and rising again. The return wall features a high plinth, followed by steps descending, four 4-centred arched doors with boarded stable doors, a slit window, and a setback to an octagonal pier with a pyramid top. This return wall contains vaults leading to cellars below the terrace. A lean-to dog kennel is attached, featuring three bays, boarded stable doors with shuttered openings, and iron railings along dwarf stone walls enclosing yards. The return wall has a moulded cap and steps down in three stages. It incorporates wooden gates and a gate pier, with a wall extending to the south-west corner of the Dungeon Tower. The wall is interrupted by late 20th-century concrete steps. The dog kennels incorporate three bays with boarded stable doors and shuttered openings. These features contribute to an important garden setting alongside the castle, church, and fountain.
