Description
St Kenelm's Well is a well-head building located off the north side of Sudeley Hill in Winchcombe. It was dated 1887 but may include some elements from a 16th-century building that once stood on the site. The structure features large limestone ashlar blocks with coped gables topped with finials, and a stone slate roof with dentil course eaves that are supported by scroll brackets at each end. There is a moulded plinth that is offset.
At the entrance, there are small chamfered lights with scrolls that resemble cusping, and a central flat-backed statue niche that is pedimented, featuring a figure carrying a sword and orb. This niche is positioned above an entablature that sits over a plank and stud door within a chamfered surround. An inscription on the building reads 'AD 819 S.KENELMUS', while another inscription notes that the 'shrine' was erected during the time of Queen Elizabeth but was reconstructed in 1887.
The well is enclosed by 19th-century iron railings, consisting of five panels by nine panels, along with gates. This site is traditionally believed to be where St Kenelm's body rested on its way to the Abbey, and a chapel was located here during the Middle Ages.
