Description

The barn at Glynch Farm dates from the mid-19th century and is built with English garden wall bond brickwork, featuring monk bond in the granary section and a tiled roof. It consists of three units: the barn itself, a central porch on one side, and a lean-to in the angle. The facade facing the fields has central double doors made of brick with stone hinge blocks and an elliptical brick arch above. On either side of the doors, there are two diamond-shaped brick grilles for air ventilation, arranged one above the other, and the eaves are decorated with dentils.

On the yard side, there is a projecting gabled porch in the center, with doors similar to those on the field side, although one of the large doors has a smaller door cut into it. Above the doors, there are two boards for a dovecote, with two holes above the upper board for access. To the left, there are air vents similar to those on the field side. To the right, there is a later brick lean-to supported on cambered brick arches at ground level, with plain eaves.

Inside, the barn features a stone-paved threshing floor and a five-bay roof supported by queen-post trusses, iron bolts, one pair of purlins, and a plank ridge. Windbraces are present on the purlin over the threshing floor only. The porch has a king-post truss and a boarded dovecote above, with an access door on the side. There is also a door cut into the side of the porch leading to the granary. This barn is a good, unaltered example of mid-19th century architecture, with its porch being somewhat unusual and the ground floor granary on low arches being a very rare feature, as the floor is raised to keep out damp. The barn forms a group with the nearby house.
