Description

The Dovecote and Cider House at Grange Farm is a 17th-century structure that was altered in the 19th century, with the cider house being added in the late 19th century. It is built of random rubble with dressed quoins for the dovecote and Sussex bond brickwork for the cider house, both topped with tiled roofs. The dovecote is tall, with the lower cider house positioned against its gable.

On the entrance side of the dovecote, there is a wide central doorway featuring a timber lintel. The quoins on the left side are mostly straight-jointed to the wall, with the top section renewed in brick. The lower quoins on the right have been replaced by brickwork from the cider house. The cider house has an eaves fascia, while the dovecote has open eaves and a hipped roof with gablets. The left side has a lean-to brick buttress at the foot of the left end, with some brick quoining above. There is a boarded window opening in the center, and the wall above is disturbed, with weatherboarding facing the gablet.

Inside, the dovecote originally contained 19 full rows of nests around the interior, made of stone, with a ledge below approximately every third row. Some nests have been removed for later openings. The floor level has been raised, and there is a blocked door opposite the main entrance, with a door leading to the cider house. The roof structure includes three trusses with gablet ends; the left end has a king-post with a bolt, the center features angle struts from the tie-beam, and the right has a tie-beam and collar with one pair of purlins and a plank ridge. In the cider house, the walls are thickened on either side of the main doors, and there is an offset beam for a spindle to the mill, along with one pair of strutted purlins.
