Description

SP 02 28 WINCHCOMBE GLOUCESTER STREET (south side) 4/86 No 52 4.7.1960

GV II

House in row. C18 with some C17 work incorporated. Coursed rubble with a little ashlar coming through from No 50 (q.v.), hipped stone slate roof with large rebuilt stone stack at party wall, left and with upper parts rendered on timber-framing; lower section, right, in squared and coursed limestone, with stone slate roof. This is a two-part composition representing modification of original small cottage layout. Left half in two storeys, 2-windowed: at first floor one small square fixed light and one 3-light C19 casement with horizontal bars both set in rendered area tight to eaves, and at ground floor two sashes without bars under flat stone lintels with keystones, and, to right of these elliptical arched opening with architrave and heavy keystone, originally the doorway but now containing a sash window. In right section a gabled dormer with sash and glazing bars over two plank doors, the larger one, to right, originally to a through-way. Interior retains large, deep, part blocked open fire to the great stack, and heavy framed roof with cruck-like supporters in the left-hand half.
