Description

No 52 on Gloucester Street is a house that dates from the 18th century, with some elements from the 17th century. It is built of coursed rubble, with some ashlar visible from the adjoining No 50. The roof is hipped and covered with stone slates, featuring a large rebuilt stone stack at the left party wall, with the upper parts rendered on timber-framing. The right side has a lower section made of squared and coursed limestone, also with a stone slate roof.

The house has a two-part layout that reflects modifications to the original small cottage design. The left half has two storeys and two windows. On the first floor, there is one small square fixed light and one three-light 19th-century casement window with horizontal bars, both set in a rendered area close to the eaves. The ground floor features two sash windows without bars under flat stone lintels with keystones. To the right of these is an elliptical arched opening with an architrave and heavy keystone, which was originally a doorway but now contains a sash window.

The right section includes a gabled dormer with a sash window and glazing bars above two plank doors, with the larger door on the right originally leading to a through-way. Inside, the house retains a large, deep, partially blocked open fire to the great stack and a heavy framed roof with cruck-like supports in the left-hand half.
