Description
A group of four headstones is located in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, approximately 4.5 to 7 metres south of the south porch. The group includes a pair of headstones and two single headstones made of limestone. The left-hand headstone is dedicated to Ann, the wife of Thomas Surman, who died in 1695, and features a winged cherub's head at the top. The right-hand headstone commemorates Philip and John Surman, with Philip having died in 1670 and John in 1680. This headstone has raised, deeply carved foliate decoration along the margins and also features a winged cherub's head at the top. There is an unidentified headstone approximately 2 metres to the east, which also has a winged cherub's head at the top, with an inscription flanked by stylized Ionic columns that have skulls at their bases. Additionally, there is a headstone about 4 metres west of a chest tomb, dedicated to Jane, the wife of John Surman, son of Thomas Surman, who died in 1678. This headstone includes a foliate margin and deeply incised scrollwork at the top.
