Description

This listing describes a row of six headstones and a single headstone located in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, approximately 11 metres south of the church. The monuments date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century and are made of limestone.

From left to right, the headstones include:

a) A tall segmental-headed headstone commemorating William Smith, who died in 1829. It features an urn with fruit and flowers and foliate scrollwork at the top.

b) An early 18th-century headstone with a sunken inscription panel that has scalloped moulding around the edge. It is adorned with a winged angel flanked by two rosettes and two hour-glasses at the top, but it has no legible inscription.

c) Another headstone for William Smith, who died in 1822, which is similar in style to the previously mentioned headstone for William Smith.

d) A headstone with a partially legible inscription that may include the date 1747. It has a sunken inscription plaque with a scalloped margin and features a winged angel's head flanked by single plant motifs in bold relief above the inscription.

e) A headstone dedicated to William Smith, who died in 1800, and his wife Mary, who died in the 1790s. This headstone is similar in style to others for the same name but has an urn above the inscription draped with swags.

f) A mid-18th-century double headstone with no legible inscription. It has a double segmental head, each featuring a winged angel's head in bold relief at the top, along with foliate scrollwork and drapery down the sides.

g) The single headstone at the centre of the group of three headstones is located about 3 metres north of the double headstone. It has a partially legible inscription that includes the dates 1760 and 1731. This headstone has a segmental head and a square inscription plaque with a wide moulded margin, topped with a small winged angel's head with down-folded wings, and foliate scrollwork on either side.
