Description
The Thomas Cartwright monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist. It dates from the 17th century and is made of limestone. The tomb measures approximately 2.25 meters in length and features a hollow-chamfered plinth. On the north side, there are two sunken basket-headed inscription plaques with carved spandrels, although the inscriptions on both panels are now illegible. The left-hand inscription is in italics and commemorates Thomas Cartwright, who died in 1706, and Mary, daughter of Thomas and Mary Cartmel, who died in 1723. The right-hand inscription also in italics is dedicated to Thomas Cartwright, who died in 1724, and another Thomas Cartwright, who died in 1726.
