Description
The gate piers and adjoining walls to Stanton Court, likely built in the 18th century, feature gates from the 20th century made for Sir P.S. Stott. Constructed from well-squared coursed ashlar stone and wrought iron, the square gate piers are flanked by straight walls that curve to the left towards the road. On the right, a plain wall extends from a cottage for about 4 meters and stands approximately 1.8 meters high, topped with a simple, unprojecting cap. Each square pier has a plinth at ground level and a semi-circular niche with a raised moulded edge that returns as a base, along with a plain impost block inside the recess. The moulded cap features a rounded step that sweeps up to a ball finial. The original gates are attached with hook hinges on the front, and there is a rib behind with a quadrant block at the foot. The pair of gates showcases repeated decorative features in the frame, with a central design above the top rail. The left pier mirrors the right, and the wall runs straight for about 4 meters before curving to the road, ending in a slightly projecting buttress. There is an additional approximate 5 meters of wall leading up to the War Memorial.
