Description
The Lower Lode Hotel is an inn dating from the 18th century and 20th century. It features red brick and 20th-century timber framing with a red tile roof and brick stacks. The building has a rectangular main body with outbuildings on the right gable end and stables, which are now partly converted, set back on the left. These stables are connected to the main body by a 20th-century extension that has a timber-framed first floor.
The two-storey main body has a symmetrical facade with three windows. It includes two projecting canted bays, each lit by 12-pane sash windows with horns. The central entrance consists of a 20th-century three-panelled door with a fanlight, flanked by a single light and a two-light casement, both featuring horizontal glazing bars. Above, there is a twelve-pane sash window in a flush surround with lugs at each corner.
The two-storey stable block was built in two phases. The ground floor is lit by five two-light casements with horizontal glazing bars, set in segmental-headed surrounds, while the first floor has a six-light casement. A wooden plaque on the upper left advertises a reward for information leading to the conviction of anyone who damages property on the Forthampton and Swinley Estate. The upper floor of the 20th-century infill between the stables and the main body is timber-framed, featuring two gabled dormers, with the ground floor being glazed and a central part-glazed door. The building also has brick dentil decoration at the eaves of both the main body and the stables. There are projecting gable-end stacks on the main body, and a blind round-headed recess with a keystone and imposts is located towards the top of the left-hand chimney. The interior has not been inspected.
