Description
The Tithe Barn, located 60 metres south of Postlip Hall, is a building that likely dates back to the 15th century and is currently used as an assembly hall. It is constructed of thin-bedded coursed limestone and features large flush quoins, a plinth, and a very steep roof covered with some slates and coped main gables, though the porches are not coped. A small figurine can be found on the saddle stone at the southwest. The barn has an eight-bay plan with two deep cart entrances in the fourth bay from the north end. These entrances have stone responds to the plinth and large plank doors with wooden lintels. The entrance facing Postlip Hall has been modified, featuring a reversed voussoir form and a raised central section. There is one buttress at the north end, part of which appears to be a rebuilding.
Inside, the barn showcases fine raised crucks resting on a plate approximately 2 metres above the floor. It has a braced collar and an extra high collar, with some crucks not extending to the ridge. The structure includes three purlins, complete wind bracing between the first and second purlins, and partial bracing between the second and third. Late 19th-century gabled lights have been added, with three on the southeast and two on the northwest. The floor is made of concrete flags, with a central section of cobbles and stone laid in 1983. Historically, the barn was reportedly used for wetting and drying the Winchcombe tobacco crop in the 17th century and is now utilized for community activities. It forms a group with Postlip Hall and Postlip Chapel.
