Description

17 and 18 East Street are two terrace houses located at the street end of a former factory, built in 1825 for George Freeman, a lace manufacturer. The houses feature Flemish bond brickwork and a slate roof that is concealed by a high parapet with brick stacks. They have a double-depth plan and are two storeys tall with three windows across the front.

On the left, there is a broad 28-pane sash window on each level, followed by a 16-pane window above the door and a 12-pane window above a small arched casement on the ground floor to the right. All windows are framed with brick voussoirs and stone cills. The central entrance has a wide pair of 6-panel flush doors topped by an elliptical radial fanlight, set deep on a stone step. The stone coping of the parapet returns to the right, with a stack positioned at the far left.

Beyond the parapeted return is a two-storey unit (No. 18) featuring a 12-pane sash window above a 20th-century door. The street front on the left connects to a wide arched opening that leads to North East Terrace, which was formerly the factory where this unit served as part of the main offices. These houses are significant as they serve as an important reminder of Tewkesbury's once-thriving stocking-knitting industry, having been used as housing since 1900.
