Description

Thanet House is a detached house built in the late 17th century, with additions from the late 18th or early 19th century. The structure features coursed rubble limestone, with red brick used for the rear outshut, and has concrete block rebuilt chimneys topped with a Welsh slate roof. The house is four storeys tall, positioned against the road at the north end, with a two-storey outshut at the rear.

The west front has three windows across the lower three storeys, all of which are cross windows with stone mullions and leaded iron casements. One window above the central doorway is now blocked, and all have combining hood moulds. The top floor is a later addition, featuring three 2-light chamfered mullioned leaded casements and a blocked oval window to the left. The central doorway has a 4-panel door and a 19th-century ashlar porch addition with a Tudor arch and openwork bargeboards. Gable end chimneys are present.

On the south end, there is single-window fenestration similar to the front, with 12-pane sashes on the side of the outshut. The north end has plank doors with timber lintels on the upper two floors, with the lower door providing direct street-level access into the building. The interior has not been inspected. The house was likely built as a residence for clothiers or a mill manager and was later adapted for partial warehousing.
