Description
Cowcombe House is a detached house that dates from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It is constructed from coursed and random rubble limestone, with some sections rebuilt in artificial stone and features ashlar chimneys. The roof is made of stone slate. The house is two stories tall, with an attic and a cellar, and has a parallel two-story rear range.
The north front displays a mix of window styles, with an original three-window arrangement at the center featuring two-light chamfered mullioned casements beneath a combined hoodmould. To the right of the center, there is a doorway below an upper floor window, which has a late 18th or early 19th century timber classical pedimented doorcase with fluted pilasters and a six-panel door. A two-story canted bay window made of ashlar with 12-pane sashes has been added to the right. To the left, there is a 19th-century alteration featuring paired 12-pane sashes on each floor. The attic includes two gabled dormers with leaded casements. There are three chimneys mounted on the ridge, two of which have moulded caps.
On the west end, there are two oval windows in the attic with flat dripmoulds. The rear of the house features various two-light mullioned casements, and similar windows can be found on the rear range, which has been more significantly altered on the north side at the east end. The interior has not been inspected.
