Description
Marle Hill House is a detached house dating from the mid- to late 17th century, with an addition of 1712, and alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The construction consists of coursed and random rubble limestone, with ashlar chimneys and a stone slate roof. The house is two storeys with an attic, and its plan is an accumulation of smaller units.
The west front features the earliest part, located to the left of centre, with gables on the north and south ends. It has a single window on the west side, which is a 3-light recessed cavetto mullioned window with hoodmoulds. An L-plan addition to the right has a gable end to the left with single windows; these are ovolo moulded with hoods, featuring 3-light windows on the ground and upper floors, and a 2-light window in the attic. A doorway to the right displays a carved date above, reading ‘T.M. 1712’. An upper section of the front wall connects to the ridge of the original block, incorporating 19th-century Jacobean-style openwork carving and pointed stone finials. The remainder of the range to the right includes a two-storey canted bay window in ashlar, featuring mullioned casements and an openwork parapet. To the north end is a former stable and coach house that was altered in the 20th century and now incorporated into the house. The south end has a gable chimney with a moulded top, and mostly restored single-window fenestration. The interior remains uninspected. The house's setting includes a former stable and coach house, and the overall appearance reflects a history of incremental development.
