Description

Glen Cottage is a late 17th-century house, with additions from the early and later 18th century, originally two houses now combined into a single detached property. It is located on Marle Hill, Chalford. The house is built of random rubble limestone, partly limewashed, with a stone slate roof. The original east-west facing house is two storeys with an attic. There are two-storey additions to the north and south. The west side has two projecting gables; the right-hand gable marks the end of the original house and contains a single-window arrangement with chamfered mullioned windows, two lights to the ground and upper floor with a hoodmould, and a single attic light. The upper floor of the north addition has a three-light window, with a 20th-century lean-to below. The left-hand gable is a 20th-century rebuilding. The south end has a single window to the side of the original house, and similar casement windows to the west side of the south addition. A rebuilt chimney with a moulded cap is located at the east end of the original house. The interior features a large stone fireplace with an adjacent salt cupboard and a stone spiral staircase. A bread oven is found in the south addition.
