Description

Kimsbury House is a large country house built around 1885 by F.S. Waller. It features rock-faced coursed rubble limestone with ashlar dressings and an ashlar chimney, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The house has a double depth central staircase plan and is two storeys high with an attic, along with a two-storey service wing to the south. The architectural style is a mix of Jacobean revival and Queen Anne.

The west front has a central parapet gable that projects forward, adorned with moulded coping and finials. On either side of the gable, the lower floors have two-window fenestration with sashes featuring keyed segmental arches and beaded architraves. The upper floor has 12-pane sashes, and the ground floor lacks glazing bars. There are two hipped roofed attic dormers, moulded eaves, and a plain banding between the floors. A central porch in the Roman Doric order projects forward, with a rusticated inner arch and a balustraded parapet. The entrance features a six-panel fielded door set in a round-arched glazed screen, and there are wide ridge-mounted rectangular chimneys with moulded caps.

The service wing to the left has three 12-pane sash windows and a hipped roof, with a single-storey service projection that has been converted into a garage. The north elevation includes a parapet gable on the right with a two-storey canted bay window, and two-window fenestration to the left with a chimney in between. The east elevation features a central section with three-window fenestration, including a round-arched ground floor with a curved roof leading to an attached conservatory. There are large parapet gablets on the hipped roofs of the flanking wing projections, each containing a two-storey bay window, along with a two-storey service wing to the left.

Inside, many rooms boast classical fireplaces, and there are stained glass windows in the hall. Kimsbury House is an accomplished late Victorian residence that significantly impacts the landscape, prominently situated on the ascent of Upton Hill.
