Description
The gazebo and Blow family memorials are located in Upton St Leonards and date from 1914 to 1939. Designed by Detmar Blow for himself, the incomplete gazebo is made of random rubble limestone with ashlar dressings. It has a square shape with a single round-arched opening on each side except for the east side, which features a chamfered plinth and two slit vents with projecting stone slate sills. The interior was intended to have a stone groin vault, but only the wall arches were completed, and a shelf projects from the east wall.
To the east of the gazebo, there are two memorial ledger stones in the field. The first stone is inscribed with 'DETMAR BLOW/AND/WINIFRED/HIS WIFE', while the second stone reads "Richard Purcell/BLOW/Elder son of Detmar/and Winifred Blow/1915-1963". The lettering on the first memorial is likely by Eric Gill, similar to the Blow memorial in the Church of St Swithin, Brookthorpe. The site offers fine views across the Vale of Gloucester and is situated along the ridge of the escarpment from Hilles House, Harescombe, which was Detmar Blow's residence.
