Description
The granary, located approximately 30 meters to the west of Court Farmhouse, was built around 1860 by Benjamin Bucknall. It features coursed rubble limestone with brick dressings and has a plain tile roof. The structure is two stories tall, with cart entries at both the east and west ends. The gabled end has two brick segmental archways on the ground floor, with one arch altered at the west end. On the upper floor at the west end, there are two 2-light mullioned openings, one of which has had its mullion removed, and a single-light opening centrally above. The east end has a single central 2-light upper floor opening and a single-light opening above it. There are flush end buttresses with weathered coping on the east end. A gabled staircase projection on the south side features a shouldered arched doorway on the east side.
Inside, a longitudinal central supporting wall on the ground floor has three segmental archways at the center. The heavy timber floor beams are supported by stone corbels. An internal stone stair leads to the granary loft and has an iron handrail with wreathed terminals. The roof is a five-bay queen post design, with mullioned openings that have segmental rere-arches. Many of the features in this solidly-built granary are similar to those found in other buildings attributed to Bucknall. It was constructed when the farm was part of William Leigh's estate and is part of a group with Court Farmhouse.
