Description
The group of two Sheppard family monuments is located in the churchyard approximately 20 meters north of the chancel of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Minchinhampton. These monuments date from the mid-18th century and consist of a chest tomb and a pedestal tomb within a railed enclosure.
The chest tomb is made of marble and grey sandstone with limestone elements. It features moulded and panelled marble ends, with the west side displaying a limestone cartouche set in an oval recess. The side panels are plain and recessed, resting on a limestone plinth with a plain, weathered marble top. This tomb is inscribed to Samuel Sheppard, who died in 1749.
The rectangular pedestal tomb has moulded marble ends and a moulded plinth. Its top is also moulded, featuring a high, boldly moulded sandstone finial coping with a domical cap. This pedestal is inscribed to Frances and Rebecca Sheppard, both of whom died in 1741. The monuments are enclosed by a stone surround with a low rail between cast iron posts topped with small ball finials.
