Description
The Parish Church of St Bartholomew is an Anglican parish church located in Coaley. It was rebuilt by Jacques and Son of Gloucester between 1854 and 1858, although the tower dates back to the 15th century. The church is constructed from squared and coursed limestone with stone slate roofs. It features a west tower, a nave, a north aisle, a deep north porch, and a chancel that is flanked by an organ chamber to the north and a vestry to the south.
The tower is built in four stages and includes diagonal buttresses with eight offsets, a stair turret at the north-east corner, and a west door that is set beneath a stopped drip. It has a three-light perpendicular ringing chamber window, a small trefoil-headed light at the second string course, a two-light pierced belfry light, blank panelled crenellation, and two gargoyles on each face. The body of the church is designed in a 14th-century style.
Inside, the church has a five-bay nave arcade supported by octagonal piers with ball-flower caps and features three-light windows. The steep arch-braced roof is carried on triple shafts that are stopped to carved heads. The north aisle has two-light windows and a steep pitched roof on triple shafts that are stopped to leaf corbels or shields. The chancel arch is adorned with angle-head corbels, and the chancel includes a four-light east window and two-light windows to the north and south, along with a near-printed barrel ceiling. The floors are tiled, and the furnishings, including the pews, pulpit, and octagonal font, are from the 19th century. The east window of the north aisle was created by Wailes, and there is a brass memorial to Daniel Stayno located on the north wall of the chancel.
