Description
Field Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse constructed from squared and coursed limestone with a stone slate roof. The building features a long gabled block and a gabled extension at the back, likely built in two sections but in quick succession. There are stacks at the ridge at bay 5, which is probably the original outer gable wall, and the bays are made of stone to ridge height, transitioning to brick above.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with an attic and a cellar, presenting a 5+3 windowed south-west front. All windows are stone cross-mullioned casements with a plain chamfer and no drips, and there is a plain stone string course above the first-floor heads. A 19th-century panelled door is located in bay 5, opposite a straight stair, while there is a blocked opening in bay 3 under a wooden lintel, which likely served as a door to the original 5-bay construction. The attics are lit from the upper parts of the first-floor windows, with the floor set at transom level.
At the back, there is one 3-light mullioned and transomed window, positioned left of centre, similar to those at the front. Inside, there are 18th-century shutters and panelled doors, and the structure has a steep roof but is relatively light. Stone steps lead from the back to a large cellar, which is vaulted at the north-west end and features a cross-vault at the opening. Another stone stair connects the cellar to the interior above.
The property shows signs of considerable modification at an early stage, including some rebuilt walling in the upper levels at the back, and a bell-cast roof suggesting that the eaves level has been raised.
