Description
Valcon Engineering Works is likely a former coach house or stables associated with Stanley House, dating from the early to mid 19th century. The building is constructed of limestone with an ashlar front range. It features a gable-ended back range with a concrete tile roof, while the front range has a flat roof behind a parapet. The structure consists of two parallel ranges; the back range is probably the coach house or stables, and the Gothic style front range has rooms on either side of a pair of central carriageways, both of which are now blocked. The two-storey front range has a parapet with a cornice and a façade divided into five bays: three central bays and two canted bays on either side. The centre of the front range projects forward and contains two tall pointed arch carriageways (blocked) with imposts, along with doorways on either side featuring 20th-century glazed doors. The windows are designed with two-centred Gothic arches, stone Y-tracery, and casements, with a rectangular central window above the carriageways. The back range has rectangular windows fitted with 20th-century casements and extensions. Inside, there is some 19th-century joinery in the front range, while the back range is used as an engineering workshop. Stanley House, the residence of the owner of the nearby Stanley Mills, may have had some connection to the mill, and the current occupant suggests that the building served as a coaching station.
